Listening and hearing are often times used interchangeably
but they are not one and the same. The latter is biological in nature, while
real listening requires presence. For that reason, hearing is easy; listening,
on the other hand, requires great discipline. Listening leads to learning.
When someone doesn’t pay attention, we tend to say that they
are “hard of hearing” when, in actuality, what they really are is “hard of
listening.” A lot of problems and misunderstandings could be very easily
avoided if we were all cognizant of this distinction 100% of the time. If only
we made the time to pay attention to other people’s words rather than just
hearing what they have to say, there would be a lot less flared tempers in this
World of ours…and life would be more beautiful.
