Nota Breve

This blog could have been named "Musings of a Portuguese-American"; I chose "Message in a Bottle" as I will never know who my words will reach and the impact they'll have on all those strangers. It is being written in American English, as well as in Portuguese from Portugal.

Because ignorance is bliss

It saddens me greatly that this type of exchange between these two seemingly decent people is so mainstream:

Because an education in general (and science in particular) is akin to atheism; something that belongs in our colleges and universities, where socialist/communist/fascist/liberal/progressive (it’s-all-the-same-thing) feminist professors make their living brainwashing our youth. What do these and other out-of touch elites know about real Americans like you and me? Because knowing the answer to questions like “Which Church do you attend” is more important than knowing some basic world geography and world affairs or the most elementary science facts. Because Adam and Eve rode on dinosaurs. Because what people wear and how they present themselves in public is much more important than the grey matter between their two ears. Because gossiping or knowing the answers to little tidbits like who slept with whom or what celebrity XYorZ looked like at a particular event is much more interesting than worrying about what goes on in the world. Who cares about the world, anyway? I have my own problems, I don’t give a rat’s ass about anyone else’s, especially about what is going on on the other side of the world! Because why should I learn another foreign language? Let them learn English; after all, they all want to come to the US anyway!

Ignorance, per se, does not bother me; there’s treatment for that. At times I’m far from being the sharpest tool in the box, and my own ignorance frequently embarrasses me. But what bothers me the most is all this Hubris that surrounds and suffocates me. If that makes me an elitist, so be it.

Sad state of affairs when so many people are proud of their ignorance.

Sometimes I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs, “Humility is not a sign of weakness, you arrogant SOB morons!”

Thankfully, there are also an awful lot of smart and conscientious folks. I just don’t know where to find them.

Haja paciência!
