Nota Breve

This blog could have been named "Musings of a Portuguese-American"; I chose "Message in a Bottle" as I will never know who my words will reach and the impact they'll have on all those strangers. It is being written in American English, as well as in Portuguese from Portugal.

A Rã (porque gosto de fábulas)

Once upon a time a group of frogs decided to go on a race up a very steep and enormous pyramid. As they’re hopping up the sides of said pyramid, filled with excitement and focused on the ultimate goal of reaching the top first, a crowd of cheering frogs gathers at the base shouting the following words of encouragement “Go, Go, Go, You can do it!”

However, as the race went on and exhaustion took over many frogs fell behind and, eventually, gave up this lofty goal.  As more and more frogs dropped out of the race, the crowd’s encouragement dwindled and the chants changed from cheers to jeers: “Loser, you’re a loser, you’ll never amount to anything, can’t you see that’s too difficult for you? You might as well lick your wounds and give up now while you’re still ahead You’ve done enough, it’s time to stop… be careful, don’t get hurt…” Eventually all the frogs became quitters – except for one.

This one frog keeps hopping along, seemingly oblivious to anything else going on around her and completely immune to all the doubters and haters – not to mention the most dangerous dream crashers of all:  “well-meaning” naysayers who seem to revel in sabotaging other people’s aspirations.

Slowly but surely, she keeps on going, one hop at a time. When she finally reaches the summit a reporter asks her the obvious question, “How were you capable of such a feat when defeat was what all the other frogs endured?

It turns out that the winning frog was deaf.

[ To which I’ll add: Stay focused! Life isn't a sprint; life's a marathon. ]
